Sustainability is defined as meeting the needs of the present without
compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own
needs. It is similar to the “seventh generation” philosophy of the
Native American Iroquois Confederacy, mandating that chiefs always
consider the effects of their actions on their descendants seven
generations in the future.
Mar Vista Farmers’ Market is instituting changes to reduce our footprint while still representing the needs of all factions involved. We realize “sustainability” is a work in progress and we hope to be able to embrace the best options toward this goal in the future. Currently we are:
- Providing a neighborhood outlet in which to support local farmers.
- Walking, riding a bike, taking the bus, or carpooling to the farmers’ market.
- Collecting green waste at the end of each market and delivering it to Ocean View Gardens for composting.
- Reducing and funneling waste into compost. We have asked our vendors to convert their take-away containers to 1950’s style paper
products. As it turns out, paper is more easily compostable than the new corn and potato products, which require a complex process to
break down.
- We have joined the LA County Commercial Food Waste Recycling Program, which will divert our food and paper waste to composting facilities in and around the Los Angeles area. In turn, this will reduce trash that will go to landfills and cut down on plastic recycling. Ultimately, we will look to tackle the plastic bag issue. In the meantime, we encourage you to bring your own bags so that we can reduce our usage of bags that do not decompose and are dangerous to sea life.
